Mbesuma Joins Sekhukhune As Strikers’ Coach

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Collins Mbesuma has left Pretoria Callies as the striker’s coach, chairman Moses Madala has confirmed.

Mbesuma has joined Sekhukhune United, where he will also train strikers to find the net on the regular basis this coming season since they have five competitions to fight for.

Mbesuma will forever be remembered for superb season in the 2004/05 season with Kaizer Chiefs under the late Ted Dumitru, scoring 35 goals in all competitions and 25 in league which has not been broken 18 years ago.

“Its good thing that a number of teams in South Africa are appointing coaches for specific position,” said Callies chairman Madala to this publication.

“That’s why many teams are failing. And he is a former player and training strikers is speciality and we must use them.

“We set trends and we put people in the market – players, coaches and managers.”

Mbesuma, having made his name at Chiefs where he won two league titles, moved to Portsmouth in the English Premiership league in the 2005/06 season, then Bursaspor in Turkey in 2007.

He didn’t last long as in 2008, Mbesuma came back to the PSL to join Mamelodi Sundowns. He then joined Swallows, Orlando Pirates – where he won the Nedbank Cup trophy in 2014.

He was also at Pirates when the Soweto giants lost the CAF Champions League final in 2013.

He was on the move and this time to Mpumalanga Black Aces, claiming his second Lesley Manyathela Golden Shoe award under Muhsin Ertugral in the 2015/16 season.

Internationally, Mbesuma was part of the Zambian side that won the Africa Cup of Nations trophy on penalty shootouts against Ivory Coast in 2012 in Equatorial Guinea, though he was never number one as Christopher Katongo, Rainford Kalaba and Emanuel Mayuka were ahead of him up top.

Meanwhile, Sekhukhune are hard at work in their preparation for the new season as they will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup.

That is after they lost to Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final, with the Soweto giants having already booked their spot in the CAF Champions League by virtue of having finished second in the DStv Premiership standings.
