Petersen Points Out Major Difference Under New Chiefs GK Coach

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has shared his experience on working with the club’s new technical team and how different it is from what they’re accustomed to as players.

Amakhosi roped in an entirely new technical team spearheaded by the appointment of head coach Nasreddine Nabi on Sunday, who joined the rest of the squad on their pre-season tour in Turkey.

Following a dismal 2023/24 campaign that saw the Glamour Boys finish in 10th place, Petersen admitted that pre-season has been tough and different since the new technical team arrived at Naturena, with new Goalkeeper Coach Ilyes Mzoughi putting them through their paces.

“The first two-and-a-half weeks of pre-season in Johannesburg, in South Africa, it was tough you know,” Petersen told SuperSport Football.

“Obviously, with the new guys in, your fitness trainer [Majdi Safi], you know the new assistant coach [Fernando da Cruz] – the new goalkeeper coach [Ilyes Mzoughi], they put us through our paces you know.

“It was a bit different for us especially with the goalkeepers you know.

“You know, generally we will try and build up and by the second-third week we start going, and we just went straight off the top.

“And first two days was a bit tough, but after that we could feel our bodies adapting you know, getting better, getting stronger. And now, I think we used to it now, and looking forward to the next couple of weeks of pre-season.”

Petersen also took time to give props to the young players and most importantly seeing them contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming campaign.

“I think it’s good for me coming from an academy. I know how important it was for me as a player coming from the academy into the first team and how it feels when you’re welcomed with open hands.

“But the aspect of working hard, I think the guys have been doing good. Uhm…some good talent and I mean they’ve shown us some flames some of the guys.

“And I’m really looking forward to now spending the rest of camp with them and obviously share some experience, and then helping them shine for the team.”

Chiefs will be hosting Tanzanian giants Young Africans in the inaugural Toyota Pre-Season Cup on July 28 in Bloemfontein as part of their pre-season plans upon their return from Turkey.
