Riveiro Questions Pirates’ Attitude After Latest Defeat

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has questioned the attitude of his players after their shock 1-0 defeat to TS Galaxy.

The Buccaneers suffered their second consecutive loss this past weekend, going down to the Rockets at Mbombela Stadium which dented their chances of finishing second in the league table with one round of league fixtures to go.

Bucs also lost to 15th-placed Richards Bay two weeks ago. Pirates have now missed two chances to go into the last day of the season in control of the second-place race after Stellenbosch FC lost to Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows.

Speaking to SuperSport TV, Riveiro questioned Pirates player’s attitude when they needed to step up and fight. He went on to say they should show more hunger and more than the opponents.

“The attitude cannot be when you’re losing, you must be brave and play more with determination as if you have nothing to lose. It is not what we are looking for, we are looking for to be a different team,” Riveiro told SuperSportTV.

“I’m ready to lose games like I always say but not because the team that is in front of you is putting more attitude, is fighting more, trying to fight more than you. It must be a football discussion not an attitude discussion.

“The attitude must always be there and today for most of the time in the 90 minutes we were not at the level that is football is asking.”

Riveiro’s charges have a chance to wrap up the season on a high note. They host SuperSport United in their last match of the season at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, May 25, which could see them qualify for the CAF Champions League provided Stellenbosch FC fail to pick up maximum points in their tie away against the Natal Rich Boyz.

Pirates could also add one more trophy to their cabinet in the form of the Nedbank Cup when they take on Sundowns in the final on June 1.
