Veteran Chippa Striker Calls Time On Illustrious Career

Chippa United’s longest-serving player Andile Mbenyane has retired from football at the age of 36.

Mbenyane started his football career at the now-defunct Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) where he left for free in the 2009/10 season to join the Chilli Boys who were still based in Cape Town at the time.

He was part of the side that gained promotion with Chippa to the elite football division from the Mvela Golden League, now known as the Motsepe Foundation Championship. At one stage he was loaned out to Chippa’s feeder team BCM Stars, who campaign in the ABC Motsepe League, to get more playing minutes under his belt.

Mbenyane has been a servant of the Chippa brand for almost 15 years. He made 178 appearances for the Eastern Cape-based side, scoring 21 goals and providing a further 14 assists.

This past season, he struggled for game time, making just five appearances across all competitions scoring one goal.

Mbenyane played his last match this past Saturday before hanging up his boots. He is expected to form part of the Chippa technical team when the 2024/25 DStv Premiership campaign resumes.
