What Rulani Told Gutted Downs Stars In Inspirational Speech After First Loss

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mowkena has urged his players to keep their heads up and not feel hard done by their only league defeat of the season.

Jaedin Rhodes’s late second-half strike was enough to see the Citizens bring Sundowns’ 29-match unbeaten run to an end at Loftus Versfeld, as Eric Tinkler’s charges left Tshwane with all three points.

Despite the defeat, which in the process dampened Masandawana’s title celebrations, Mokwena admitted they would’ve loved to complete an ‘invincible’ season and told his players not to feel gutted and rather celebrate their achievement.

Sundowns & CT City Starting XIs Confirmed

“We just won the most iconic and the most memorable trophy in the history of this club,” Rulani said on SStv Channel 202.

“The next time the next generation does this [pointing the Sundowns trademark finger up], there is going to be a meaning. And the meaning is the first group to win seven premiership titles for the first time in the history of this club in a row.

“And that is 10 months of a lot of hard work. And in football you win, you lose or you draw.

“And when you lose, and I’ve told you this before, that victory and defeats are both possible, you treat both of them the same way.

“You’re not entitled to win. And so, I don’t want to see anyone that’s got his head down during this moment. You deserve to be celebrated but nobody deserves to celebrate you more than you should be celebrating yourselves.

“And so, I want you to give yourselves an incredible round of applause for what has been an amazing season.”

Masandawana still have a chance to complete a league and cup double when they take on Orlando Pirates in the final of the Nedbank Cup at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, June 1.
