Chiefs Suffer Late Blow Vs Downs In MTN8 Semi-Final

Mamelodi Sundowns scored in injury-time to prevent Kaizer Chiefs from winning the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

After a dire opening half with the only thing to write about was the injury of Sundowns captain Themba Zwane, the game sprung into life after the hour mark only.

Jasond González made a surprise debut coming on for Mduduzi Mdantsane and while his first run in on goal was off-side, his presence changed the dynamic for Amakhosi.

Sundowns dominated possession and attacking territory for large spells but for all their superiority in statistics, they were made to play when Edson Castillo opened the scoring with a stunning diving header, his third goal of the season.

It was a stunning delivery from the in-form Ashely du Preez who found the Venezuela international in the area to head the ball beyond Ronwen Williams.

The goal sparked wild scenes at the Calabash and turned the tie into an end-to-end affair for the remainder of the clash. Sundowns did eventually find the equaliser via a powerful header by Khuliso Mudau.

Chiefs will travel to the Lucas Moripe Stadium for the second-leg tie on 23 September – where Sundowns now hold the away goal advantage.
