Dr. Khoza Provides Update On New League Trophy

Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza has stated the new league trophy will be the best you can get out of South Africa.

Khoza who is set to be re-elected as PSL Chairman unopposed, called the fourth-estate to the PSL offices. The last time it happened, a R900-million sponsorship was announced.

This time around it brought more clarity around the future of the partnership as the winners’ prize money of R20-million was confirmed but Khoza revealed the official trophy is still in the process of being made.

“Something we didn’t talk about [at the announcement] was the trophy [of the league] it will take a very unique journey because it’s a trophy that has a lot of history and cultural elements around it,” Khoza explained at the PSL offices on Wednesday morning.

“It’s going to take a bit of time to finalise – it’s a story on its own, it’s a journey of its own and when we say to the members of the fourth estate; watch this space, because it’s something monumental, something historical, something… the best to come out of this country.

“There are so many things that are beautiful but we forget to talk about it ourselves. The journey of finalising this trophy will capture the essence of who we are as South Africans, the best we can get out of this country.

“You [the media] will be invited when that journey starts, to share with you, the development of that journey, the travelling of that journey, ultimately to the day we finalise the issue of the trophy, so watch this space.”

Pirates are currently leading the Betway Premiership with 21 points in seven games, a new club record after seven wins from their opening seven games.
