Ellis – It’s Been A Long Time Coming

After leading Banyana Banyana to WAFCON victory, Desiree Ellis said that when she saw the crowd at the final, she was not perturbed, and was confident that something special was going to happen.

Banyana Banyana lifted their first African title on Saturday night as they beat hosts Morocco 2-1 in the final in Rabat, in front of a packed partisan crowd.

“You know, it’s been a long time coming,” Ellis told SAFA media.

“I think, even me as a player, I got a silver in 2000 when we played the tournament in South Africa, we lost to Nigeria. And a lot of coaches and players before, we’ve all tried, but today was really special.

“You know when we walked out, and we saw the crowd, I was not perturbed. As I said that reminded me of 2015 when we went to Equatorial Guinea, and before we even went to the stadium, we had a meeting, and the players came in with a big speaker, and I knew today something special was gonna happen.

“I thought we played really, really well. I said, maybe we’ll keep the goals for the final. But the goals were so well taken, and I think the players were special today.”
