European Club Submits Improved Offer For Maseko

Belgium side KVC Westerlo have sent SuperSport United a “revised offer” for Bafana Bafana winger Thapelo Maseko, iDiski Times has learnt.

Westerlo already had one offer for Maseko rejected by SuperSport after it did not meet the asking price for the winger, as CEO Stan Matthews had confirmed.

However, Westerlo, the club which sold Lyle Foster to Burnley in January this year, have now come back with an improved offer for the 19-year-old, who featured in 25 matches last season for SuperSport, scoring four goals in the process.

Maseko’s agent Glyin Binkin, who attended the funeral service of Clive Barker in Durban on Thursday, as he was Bafana Bafana team manager under the legendary coach for the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, said Maseko remains a wanted man both locally and internationally.

“Obviously there has been a lot of interest, both locally and internationally,” said Binkin.

“The first prize for the player will be to go overseas, if the right opportunity arises, but the European market is financially constrained and it is difficult for the European clubs to submit an offer, which is acceptable to SuperSport.

“We will have to wait and see, but the player is happy at SuperSport, especially last season because he is still young and hopeful he gets the chance [for Bafana Bafana] this weekend.

“He’s good, young man, well grounded, disciplined which is important, and we will have to see what happens in the next couple of months.”

As Binkin said there is also an interest locally, Sundowns are said to be interested in Maseko in striking a deal. But there are other clubs who have expressed an interest in Maseko from the PSL.

“With Sundowns, we will not shut down any opportunities at the moment,” he explained.

“There are other interests from other clubs in South Africa and we will have to see whether it is good for the player, first and foremost, and what is right for SuperSport because he has a long-term contract with SuperSport.

“We will have to monitor the situation in the next coming months.”

If Sundowns are interested, it will not be the first time the Tshwane giants and Westerlo are tussling for the services of a SuperSport United player.

Westerlo were also keen on Teboho Mokoena, but they were beaten by Sundowns in the January transfer window in 2022.

Mokoena was at his best this past season, featuring in 38 matches in all competitions, scoring two goals, silently taking over from Andile Jali.

Having done so, he claimed PSL Footballer of the Season and DStv Premiership Midfielder of the Season awards.
