Hunt – They Almost Got Relegated Last Time

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt believes they could benefit from CAF Champions League football but is wary of what happened to the squad in their last foray in Africa.

Hunt last tasted continental football with Kaizer Chiefs, where he led them to the semi-final of the competition before he was sacked.

And with Matsatsansa now in second place behind Mamelodi Sundowns with nine rounds of fixtures to go, there’s growing optimism they may find themselves in Africa’s elite club competition ahead of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

“I’d love to get there, let’s get there first, I think the benefits… Africa always makes the team stronger, makes the team mentally stronger, better,” he said when asked by iDiski Times what the benefits would to secure Champions League qualification.

“There are certain times where you can rotate the squad a little bit here and there, so I think it makes you better and when you come to play domestically, obviously it can affect you as it did with SuperSport the last time, they almost got relegated.

“They got to the final of the Confederation Cup but we will cross that bridge when we get there, let’s concentrate first on what we’re doing, not even thinking of planning ahead.”

SuperSport will be aiming to solidify their second-place finish this Sunday when they take on an unpredictacble Golden Arrows side at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
