Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo when asked what he still wants to achieve as a player.
Khune, 36, was suspended by his club in early December after allegedly arriving to training under the influence of alcohol.
But he has been voted in the PSL All Star XI that will take on Stellenbosch FC in Saturday’s Carling Black Label Cup.
Ahead of the season, Chiefs announced Khune had signed a new one-year deal with the club stating “he will play for Amakhosi for one final season” before moving into “a new coaching and ambassadorial role working with the marketing division at the Club”.
However, Khune has now once again reiterated that he feels he still has a lot to offer.
“I always refer my story to Lionel Messi having won seven Ballon d’Ors [Messi has eight Ballon d’Ors] and he’s still hungry for more,” he told journalists.
“I always refer to Cristiano Ronaldo having won five Ballon d’Ors and he’s still hungry for more – he breaks records left, right and centre, he breaks records every league he plays in.
“You can never win enough as a footballer. I’ve won four Goalkeeper of the Season accolades in the country, but I still feel that I can win more.
“Obviously age is not on my side anymore, but I still feel with my experience I can still achieve and I’ll never stop believing that it’s still possible.
“Gianluigi Buffon was still number one for Italy and Juventus until the age of 45 and he going strong. So it’s up to you as a footballer on how you behave, how you carry yourself and the goals that you set yourself as a youngster.
“You wanna tick all the boxes. I’m still hungry for more success and I have to show it on the field. I cannot only talk about it.”
The Carling Black Label Cup will kick off at 15:00 on Saturday at the Peter Mokhaba Stadium. So far, over 15,000 tickets have been sold and more are still available for just R40.
