Mamelodi Sundowns secured their place in the quarter-final of the Nedbank Cup after a 2-0 win over Maritzburg United on Sunday evening at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
In what was an underwhelming opening half from the DStv Premiership leaders, the most memorable action was the thunderstorm that halted the game for over an hour.
Maritzburg, in fact, had more shots on target with two, to Sundowns’ one for the opening 45 minutes where goalkeeper Dumisani Msibi had little to do.
To be fair Onyango was hardly forced into a meaningful save either and the second half didn’t improve matters as it proved to be a game of broken play, with The Team of Choice matching their illustrious opposition in duels and work rate.
But as the game reached around the 70th-minute mark, they tired out with Sundowns grabbing full control of the game and it was no surprise when Thembinkosi Lorch opened the scoring in the 74th minute of the game.
Lorch completed his brace late the in the game, after a miskick by youngster Kutlwano Letlhaku inside the box found him unmarked inside the box.
It proved to be the winner as Sundowns became the last team to book their place in the last-eight of the Nedbank Cup ahead of the FIFA international break.
