Motsepe Coy On Zungu, Williams To Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns Chairman Thlopie Motsepe has remained coy on speculation the club are looking to sign Bongani Zungu and Ronwen Williams.

The experienced Bafana Bafana internationals have been two of the star names linked with the club, with SABC Sport reporting that Zungu has already been offered a contract.

The former Masadawana midfielder will not be short of suitors as he enters the peak of his career, he stated on several occasions that ‘Sundowns will always be his home’.

Meanwhile, Bafana captain Williams confirmed he’s looking for a new challenge and to move to a team challenging for silverware and playing in the CAF Champions League regularly.

“At the moment obviously we can’t talk about any players that aren’t at the football club and not part of our organisation,” he said. “But we will be looking to bring in players as the transfer window progresses, but right now it would be disrespectful to talk about players [who are] not at this football club.”

While he was not open to discussing the potential ins and outs at the club with the window fast approaching, he touched on the stain of their campaign which several players and the coaches have openly stated hurts despite a domestic treble success this past season.

Sundowns fell at the quarter-final stage of Africa’s elite club competition for a third consecutive season and Motsepe admits it’s something they are looking to rectify in the 2022/23 campaign.

Sundowns Announce New Youth Initiative

“We have to be bold and as I always say at Mamelodi Sundowns, we want to be successful in the Champions League and we want to win the Champions League,” he said.

“Last season it was a bit of a disappointment at how we exited, but there were a lot of positives we can draw from the way the club performed, the way we played and the opponents that we faced.

“It’s about us now making sure that when we start the season, we always start fairly strong, I mean last season we bagged that MTN8 and that had a positive effect on the team. Where we will look to strengthen is making sure that when we’re out of the group stage, the mentality shifts.

“We will look to be more ruthless and I know with our Coaches, Sporting Director, they are working already on thinking on how we can improve and where we need to improve, so we’re positive and optimistic about the season ahead.”
