Al Ahly head coach Jose Riveiro admits his career trajectory over the past three years has been amazing and it’s not something he planned but just happened with hard work at Orlando Pirates.
Riveiro arrived in Johannesburg in June 2022 as an unknown figure from Finland in only his second role as a senior head coach and was even labelled as a plumber by sections of the media.

He showed up, won five domestic trophies with Pirates before Al Ahly came calling for the 2025 FIFA World Cup where he found himself in his competitive debut for the Red Devils.
“Look, it was never a plan obviously, as coaches we know how difficult it is to get a good project, first of all, I was lucky to get a good one with Orlando Pirates, three years ago,” he said when asked by iDiski Times whether he envisioned this when he arrived in Johannesburg.
“I was lucky enough to deliver what the club was expecting of me, and that’s why I am sitting here right now because Al Ahly decided to give me an opportunity to lead a good project, another good one. Here I am now, trying to do my best in a short space of time together with my coaching staff.
“We have not had so much time to prepare for this competition together but we’re trying our best, but you know me very well, I’m not the type of person to talk about big plans about myself.
“I just try to do my job as good as I can and try to affect the players lives, careers in a positive way and as a consequence, try to improve and help improve the history of the club, which right now is Al Ahly.”
The Club Of The Century will now turn their attention to Brazilian giants Palmeiras next week Thursday at Metlife Stadium in New York City.
