Al Ahly head coach Jose Riveiro has reacted to his first defeat at the club since being appointed as the successor to Marcel Koller.
The Spaniard has endured a tricky start to life at the Egyptian giants as he left his role at Orlando Pirates for – and his competitive debut coming against Inter Miami in the opening game of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

While there’s some form of understanding that his knowledge of the squad and lack of time to prepare has handicapped the results, no goals in two opening games makes for poor reading as they draw 0-0 to Inter Miami and lost 2-0 to Palmeiras.
“One free kick and it was 1-0, then we lost the ball, and he scored another goal,” Riveiro said after the game. “I think the game was even before that, but they scored the goals.
“The match was beyond our capacity. We tried to come back after the weather interrupted with a new style of play, but we failed to create enough opportunities.”
Ahly now need to be beat FC Porto 2-0 in their final Group A game and hope the Brazilian side beat the MLS outfit 1-0 to have a chance for qualification to the knockout stages.
