Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has urged Spain to savour every moment of Lionel Messi’s brilliance, insisting there should no longer be any debate over the captain’s place as the greatest footballer in history.
Speaking after Argentina’s dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final in Atlanta, Scaloni reflected on Messi’s remarkable career and the privilege of watching him perform at the highest level for so many years.

“Argentina gave Spain the privilege of watching Lionel Messi play there for so many years,” Scaloni said in the post-match press conference.
“I hope they appreciate the extraordinary player he is. For me, what more does Messi have to do to be considered the greatest footballer in history?
“There isn’t the slightest doubt in my mind. I hope Spain enjoys him too. I know many people there love him, and I hope they continue to appreciate just how unique he is.”
Messi, who spent more than two decades at Barcelona before leaving the Spanish giants in 2021, has long been regarded as one of LaLiga’s greatest-ever players after rewriting the record books during his glittering spell in Catalonia.
Now, leading Argentina into another FIFA World Cup final, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner continues to add to an unparalleled legacy, with Scaloni making it clear he believes the debate over the greatest player of all time is already settled.
