Banyana Outclass Super Falcons
Banyana Banyana lifted the Aisha Buhari Cup after impressively beating Nigeria’s Super Falcons 4-2 in Lagos on Tuesday evening.
Banyana beat Ghana in their first game in the competition, winning 3-0 last Friday.
It was an explosive start from Desiree Ellis’ team, as the Super Falcons, who are the number one team in Africa, found themselves troubled by an impressive Banyana, and the dangerous Thembi Kgatlana in particular.
Banyana were in the lead in the fifth minute thanks to an own goal from Chidi Alozie, who was unable to clear a ball in from Hilda Magaia.
A penalty was then awarded to Banyana in the 18th minute after a handball in the box from Onomi Ebi. Linda Motlhalo stepped up and made no mistake.
Gabriela Salgado made it three just before half-time, heading in from close range after some good work from Kgatlana.
A good competitive first half display by Banyana saw them go into the break 3-0 up.
But Nigeria pulled one back immediately at the start of the second half, as substitute Vivian Ikechukwu tapped in from close range, after Kaylin Swart missed her attempt to clear a cross.
Banyana missed an opportunity to get a fourth in the 49th minute, as the ball was cleared off the line, and Nigeria pulled another back in the 53rd minute, Ikechukwu scoring a stunner from range.
It was game on and Glory Ogbonna went close in the 60th minute but Swart made a good save to stop the long range effort.
Buoyed on by the home support, the Super Falcons continued to press for an equaliser, but Banyana stood strong, and the task for the stunned Nigerians was made tougher when Motlhalo was brought down in the 85th minute and another penalty was awarded.
Mamello Makhabane stepped up and made no mistake to make the score 4-2.
