Ex-Al Ahly Coach Wants Pitso Vs Downs In CAFCL
Former Al Ahly coach Fathi Mabrouk has said he wants Pitso Mosimane’s men to face Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League, but also criticized ‘Jingles’ for his recent team selection.
Mabrouk himself was in charge of the ‘Club of the Century’ for just five months between May and October 2015 but is still following his former club’s progress.
Ahead of next week’s draw for the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League, he has now stated that would like to see a reunion between Mosimane and his former side.
“I hope Al Ahly face Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League quarter-finals,” he said, as per Kingfut.
Mabrouk, though, also criticized Mosimane for putting first-choice goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy straight back into his starting XI after he recovered from COVID-19.
The 32-year-old was caught off-guard in the 93rd minute against Smouha, allowing the Egyptian Premier League side to hand Mosimane his first defeat in domestic competitions since he joined Al Ahly.
“Al Ahly have some significant absences in the current period, which affected them on the pitch,” he added.
“Ali Lotfi (second-choice keeper) played a big match against Zamalek, and it was necessary to give him the opportunity in the Smouha match, especially since El-Shennawy had just recovered from Covid-19.
“The competition for the Egyptian Premier League title will definitely be between Al-Ahly and Zamalek.”
The draw for the CAF Champions League quarter-finals will take place on 30th April, when Al Ahly, Downs as well as Kaizer Chiefs will find out who they will face in the next round.
