Notoane Wants EPL Starlet For Olympics
South African U23 coach David Notoane wants to convince Premier League starlet Kgaogelo Chauke to play for Amaglug-glug at the Tokyo Olympics.
South Africa were drawn in Group A with hosts Japan, Mexico and France.
Chauke is one of 11 overseas based players who were selected in Notoane’s 40-men preliminary squad and the coach has made his intentions clear that he would like the teenage starlet to travel to Tokyo with the team.
The Southampton midfielder, though, was also called up for England’s U18 into a training camp in November and it remains to be seen whether he will chose South Africa over England.
He was born in Mamelodi but moved to England at the age of one with his parents. The 18-year-old signed his first professional contract with the Saints in January 2020.
He has featured in eight Premier League U23 games this season and made his first team debut for Southampton in a 2-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup on 19 January 2021.
Notoane told iDiski Times senior writer Velile Mnyandu that he wants to secure Chauke’s services for the Olympics and you can read the exclusive interview in this week’s paper – available in Zulu and English.
