Pitso Mosimane has been compared to Al Ahly’s most successful coach after lifting his fourth trophy since joining the Egyptian giants.
The South African coach guided Al Ahly to their 10th CAF Champions League title – the famous La Decima – after beating Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 last weekend.
As a consequence, Mosimane has now won two CAF Champions Leagues, one CAF Super Cup and one Egyptian Cup with the ‘Club of the Century’, while he also collected a bronze medal at the FIFA Club World Cup.
He also received an Egyptian Premier League medal, but that competition had already been wrapped up by his predecessor Rene Weiler.
Nevertheless, Mosimane’s stint in Egypt has impressed many and silenced many of his critics, with club legend Wael Gomaa comparing Mosimane to Al Ahly’s most successful coach Manuel Jose, who won four CAF Champions League titles and four CAF Super Cups with the ‘Club of the Century’.
“He is following Manuel Jose’s footsteps,” Gomaa said, as per Kingfut.
“Jose made history with the club and Pitso has the chance too, especially that he has a lot of players that are craving titles.”
Gomaa also insisted that Al Ahly’s group stage defeat against Simba – the club’s only defeat in 16 CAFCL matches since Mosimane has joined the club – was a wake-up call for the team and his players.
“Simba’s match was a harsh lesson for Mosimane, after which the team’s performance evolved, because Mosimane knew that he should not play with such a defensive mentality,” he explained.
“Simba’s match was pivotal in Al Ahly’s journey this season in the Champions League.
“The players also gained a lot of confidence, and their performance improved. Al Ahly improved individually and collectively after Simba’s match in the group stage.”
