Pitso Handed Blow In Title Race
Pitso Mosimane has reacted to six of his Al Ahly players being called up to the Egyptian Olympics squad, saying it’s a disadvantage in the title race.
Al Ahly’s Mohamed El-Shennawy, Ahmed Ramadan Beckham, Akram Tawfik, Nasser Maher, Nasser Maher and Salah Mohsen were all included in Egypt’s U23 squad to travel to the Tokyo Olympics.
The tournament falls outside of the FIFA calendar, meaning domestic football continues and Mosimane said their title defense in the Egyptian will be much tougher without those players.
“We are expecting a very difficult time after the CAF Champions League final,” the South African coach told his club’s official website.
“We will miss six players who will participate in the Olympics. It is not easy to deal with the absence of six players in that stage of the season.”
Mosimane spoke after his side’s 4-0 thrashing of Smouha and was full of praise for his players after returning to winning ways.
“We had a better performance than our last match against Pyramids. We won the game with plenty of goals,” he added.
“It was important to win tonight after a draw against Pyramids and losing two points in the dying moment of the game. Also, I am happy to end the game with a clean sheet.”
“I was so sad after the draw against Pyramids after missing many chances in the game. Today we returned to the winning track.”
Al Ahly still face Al Mokawloon and Misr Let Makasa in the Egyptian Premier League before the CAF Champions League final against Kaizer Chiefs on 17 July.
