Pitso Mosimane has missed out on his fifth trophy since joining Al Ahly after losing to Tala’ea El-Gaish on penalties in the Egyptian Super Cup.
Both teams entered the match after a four-week break, leading to a first half with very few scoring opportunities.
El-Gaish had a decent chance after 24 minutes, but Mohamed El-Shenawy punched away a dangerous free-kick inside the box.
Meanwhile, Al Ahly tested the El-Gaish keeper Mohamed Bassam several times from distance without really threatening his goal.
Mohamed Sherif had the best chance of the first half when he was played in on goal but his shot missed the far post by the slightest of margin as both teams entered the break goalless.
Al Ahly had a great chance in the 53rd minute when Ali Maaloul played in Sherif, but his attempt from close range missed the target.
Pitso Mosimane reacted to his side’s little attacking threat and brought on new signing Luis Miquissone after 60 minutes.
Bassam once again denied Al Ahly in the 72nd minute pushing a shot from Afsha from inside the box over the bar.
Al Ahly thought they had scored in the 78th minute but a header by Hamdi Fathi sailed past the post.
Five minutes later Miquissone had his first attempt on goal but his shot sailed over the bar, while El-Gaish came close with a shot from far range.
Al Ahly played their best attack in the 93rd minute but a header by Sherif didn’t find the target despite an inch-perfect cross from Maaloul as they game went into extra-time.
However, no team was able to find the back of the net in extra-time either and the game went to penalties.
Mosimane’s men, though, missed the penalty shootout with the El-Gaish keeper saving three spot kicks.
