Baxter – We Hung Him Out To Dry

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has praised one of his side’s players despite their heavy 4-1 defeat to Royal AM, saying his team hung him out to dry.

Amakhosi suffered their joint-heaviest defeat in the two reigns under Baxter, with the only other game that Chiefs conceded four goals in under Baxter being his first in charge against Mamelodi Sundowns in 2012.

Baxter opted to change his goalkeeper for the clash against Royal AM, picking Brandon Petersen after Bruce Bvuma had featured in the first three DStv Premiership games.

However, the coach insisted that Petersen was not to blame for the heavy defeat and was often left quite alone by his teammates.

“Brandon, I think we hung him out to dry a little bit,” Baxter said.

“Whenever he was brought into the game, he brought into the game. I thought his distribution was quote good in the first half and his calmness was quite good.

“But whenever he had to make a save it was almost a last-dip save, so I don’t think it wasn’t a very easy game for Brandon in that respect.”

Baxter has used three players so far this season, with Itumeleng Khune featuring in the MTN8 quarter-final against Sundowns, Bvuma playing against TS Galaxy, Baroka and Downs in the league before Petersen was selected against Royal AM.
