Pitso’s Al Ahly Drop Points In Title Race

Just days after their CAF Champions League final win over Kaizer Chiefs, Al Ahly returned to league football and dropped points.

Mosimane had to make four changes to his starting XI after six of his players joined Egypt’s Olympics squad.

As a consequence, Mohamed El Shenawy, Akram Tawfik, Hussein El Shahat and Taher Mohamed Taher were replaced by Ali Lofty, Mohamed Many, Junior Ajayi and Mahmoud Kahraba in the line-up.

Al Ahly goal keeper Ali Lofty was forced into a good save after 13 minutes, pushing a shot around the post.

Al Ahly’s Kahraba came close to scoring from a header a few minutes later but it was saved by goal keeper Mahmoud El Zonfoly.

Amr El Soleya saw a spectacular attempt from 35 yards saved by the keeper in the 25th minute.

Al Ahly came close to scoring just before half-time when a shot by Afsha was deflected past the post by one of the home side’s own players.

Afsha scored Al Ahly’s goal just after the break with a shot from the centre of the box. Al Ahly had a brilliant opportunity to add to scoreline from a counter but a sloppy touch by Mohamed Sherif ended a three-vs-one attack in the 60th minute.

However, Al Ahly did not look as dominant as usual, with several players showing signs of tiredness and a lack of concentration tonight.

The visitors saw a dangerous shot from outside the box saved by Ali Lofty. Bank of Egypt, though, did equalise in the 86th minute thanks to a powerful header by Karim Bambo.

The point is a blow for Al Ahly in the title race as they now sit nine points behind rivals Zamalek with three games in hand.
