Pitso’s Al Ahly Snatch Important Win
Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly had to work hard to collect another important win in the Egyptian Premier League.
The match was short of highlights in the first 30 minutes with Al Ahly slightly dominating proceedings without creating too many clear chances.
The game remained rare on real goalscoring opportunities until the break, with Akram Tawfik’s shot from outside the box just before the interval being one of the better chances, but it sailed over.
Al Ahly had 72% of possession in the first half but couldn’t make their dominance count as the game entered half-time goalless.
Substitute Walter Bwalya’s shot in the 60th minute looked destined for goal but it was blocked by an Mokawloon defender.
Al Ahly came close to scoring when a header by Hamdi Fathi sailed just wide of the post, with Mokawloon only focussing on defence without creating any real attacking threat.
Salah Mohsen, another second-half substitute, had a shot blocked following nice interplay on the left with Ali Maaloul fifteen minutes from time, but Al Ahly did eventually find the opener when Mohsen’s next attempt hit the underside of the bar and bounced behind the line – which was confirmed after VAR review.
Mohsen could’ve completed his brace but his header on the far post following a corner just missed the goal post.
Mohamed Sherif had a late attempt in 91st saved by the keeper, but he did score the 2-0 following a superb counter with literally the last kick of the game.
The victory saw Al Ahly close their gap on leaders Zamalek to 13 points, with five games in hand.
