Mothiba Returns After 673 Days!

Lebo Mothiba’s injury nightmare has finally come to an end after the 25-year-old made his long-awaited comeback 673 days after picking up a knee injury.

It was a mere coincidence that Mothiba returned in a game against Montpellier after picking up a serious knee injury against the same opponents on 29 February 2020.

Mothiba already came close to a comeback in September but a hamstring injury further delayed his reappearance.

On Sunday, Mothiba came off the bench for 14 minutes in Strasbourg’s 1-0 defeat to Montpellier in the French Cup, marking it his first first-team appearance in nearly two years.

Overall, the 25-year-old has made 60 appearances for Strasbourg, scoring 14 goals.

He is the only South African player left in Europe’s top five leagues after Keagan Dolly returned the Kaizer Chiefs in the beginning of the season and Bongani Zungu’s Amiens got relegated.

Mothiba has also found the back of the net four times in 14 appearances for Bafana Bafana and could become an option for coach Hugo Broos.

The striker could get another chance to feature when Strasbourg face Metz in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
