11 New Players Called Up To Bafana

After Hugo Broos has announced his provisional Bafana Bafana squad, here are the 11 new players that he’s called up, including three Orlando Pirates stars.

The Belgian tactician again opted to select an initial provisional squad of 34, which he will trim down to 23 players.

South Africa collected four points from their first two FIFA World Cup qualifiers for next year’s tournament in Qatar, topping Group G after beating Ghana 1-0 and playing to a goalless draw with Zimbabwe.

They will now meet Ethiopia, who started their campaign with a 1-0 defeat against Black Stars and 1-0 victory over the Warriors, in a double-header in October, facing them away from home on 9 October before hosting them at the FNB Stadium on 12 October.

Broos has made some changes to his previous selection, dropping Austin Dube and Sibusiso Mabiliso and Gift Links, while Sipho Mbule is out with an injury.

However, there were also new faces – in comparison to the previous squad – including Pirates trio Goodman Mosele, Vincent Pule and Tshegofatso Mabasa, who returned to full fitness and netted two goals in his first two games back. There was also a re-call for Kaizer Chiefs’ S’fiso Hlanti.

Cape Town City duo Terrence Mashego and Mdu Mdantsane were also called up for the first time, as were SuperSport United’s Luke Fleurs and Jesse Donn.

In addition, South African U23 captain Tercious Malepe has also been included after starting his life at AmaZulu, while Baroka’s Vusi Sibiya and Golden Arrows’ Thabani Zuke also made the initial squad.

Finally, Sphephelo Sithole from Belenenses has also been called up again after dropping out of the previous selection due to testing positive for Covid-19.
