Banyana Excited To Re-Unite With Foreign-Based Players

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis says she has been pleased with how things have gone in their camp so far, and she is looking forward to the foreign-based players joining the team in Nigeria ahead of Aisha Buhari Women’s Cup.

Many of the players based in Europe will still be playing this weekend, and will only join up with the team on the 13th, four days before the tournament gets underway.

With many of the players, including Refiloe Jane,  Lebohang Ramalepe and Linda Motlhalo, having not featured for Banyana since 2019, due to the covid-19 pandemic, Ellis is excited to have them join up.

“Well, 90% of them that’s coming to camp, play on the 12th, and we praying and keeping our fingers crossed that everything is okay,” Ellis said at the media day on Thursday.

“So they fly on the 13th and they will meet up with us on the evening of the 13th in Nigeria. Our first game is obviously on the 17th, so we have a bit of time where we can train together with them.

“And hopefully it will be synergy very quickly, even though we haven’t seen some of them for two years.

“Not only Fifi it will be Lebogang Ramalepe, it will be Linda as well. Linda’s done fantastically well in Sweden.

“Hilda we last saw in 2020 at the Cosafa Cup, so we really looking forward to seeing them. Janine was back before, Thembi has been back before. So we really looking forward to seeing them.”
