Banyana Into Cosafa Cup Semis
Banyana Bayana booked their spot in the semi-finals of the Cosafa Cup after beating Mozambique 3-1 at the Wolfson Stadium.
Desiree Ellis’s team finish top of Group A on seven points, after beating Malawi, and drawing with Angola in their opening two games.
And Banyana took the lead in the 24th minute as Sibulele Holweni ran down the left flank before cutting into the box and scoring.
While Banyana continued to create chances, they were unable to add to their tally before halftime, and at the break it remained 1-0.
It was more of the same in the second half as Banyana continued to create half chances, but weren’t adding to the score.
And it came back to hurt Banyana in the 64th minute, as Mozambique found an equaliser with a rare attack forward and captain Cina Manuel did well to head in past Kaylin Swart.
Fortunately it was short-lived as Melinda Kgadiete put Banyana back in front two minutes later, as she tapped in from close range after a set piece.
Banyana came close to increasing their lead in the 75th minute, but Gabriela Salgado’s free kick attempt hit the woodwork, though it was 3-1 a minute later, as Holweni added her second from close range, following up after the ball hit the woodwork again.
