Banyana Off To Winning Start At Cosafa
Banyana Banyana began their Cosafa Cup campaign with a hard fought 2-1 win over Malawi at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday.
Banyana were in the lead just the second minute as Melinda Kgadiete raced onto a long ball from goalkeeper Kaylin Swart, and lobbed the ball over the advancing Malawian goalkeeper Samir Amidu.
However after the goal Desiree Ellis’s team struggled with their cohesion, and while they were dominating, they were also giving away a lot of their possession.
But they did eventually increase their lead and just two minutes after Malawi came close but were denied by a good save from Swart, as Noxolo Cesane’s effort was parried by Amidu into the goal to make it 2-0 in the 38th minute.
After the break, Banyana continued to threaten but again struggled to penetrate in the final third. The Malawians were not giving in either, and gave as good as they got, with Banyana’s defence led by captain Janine Van Wyk, the only foreign-based player in the squad, having to be alert a few times.
And Malawi pulled a goal back in the 89th minute, as Wezzie Mvula took advantage of a lapse of concentration and did enough to beat Swart.
