Barker Proud of Stellies’ Effort
Steve Barker was pleased with his Stellenbosch team’s commitment as they fought to keep their DStv Premiership status.
Stellenbosch ended the season in 14th position, after what Barker describes as an up and down season.
The club had their own awards this week and Deano Van Rooyen walked away with the big prizes of the club’s footballer of the season and player’s player of the season, while Jayden Adams was named young player of the season.
“Ja, it’s tough to describe we’ve been through difficult times throughout the season, we’ve had some ups, we’ve had some downs,” Barker told the club’s media department.
“The last four matches have been four nil-nil draws, we had to fight for everything that we want to keep, everything that we fought for two years ago, to be in the PSL. We had to fight to keep our status and commitment of the players, just really, I’m very proud of each and every one of them.
“They made their supporters proud, they made their families proud, that made our club and our supporters and management proud by the effort that they put in.”
Barker says that he looking forward to give more young players a chance next season.
“Ja, what will give me confidence is some of the senior players, the leadership, the quality, their fight, the guidance that they’ve given, but I don’t know how to put it, but South Africa is going to be shocked and surprised by some of the young talent that we have at this club.
“Some of them didn’t get a chance, some did. This club’s got a bright future. A lot of good talent. I’m looking forward to next season, unleashing them and giving them the opportunity that they deserve.”
