Benni McCarthy was delighted with the efforts of his AmaZulu players after their 1-0 win over SuperSport in the DStv Premiership on Tuesday.
Siphelele Mthembu scored the only goal of the match as AmaZulu joined Golden Arrows on 28 points, although they remain sixth on goal difference.
McCarthy was pleased with how his team played, though he admits he wouldn’t have minded if they had closed the game up earlier by scoring another goal or two.
“No, listen, I’m absolutely delighted for the boys. You know the players, they always work hard, and they give me everything they’ve got,” McCarthy said after the game.
“So I have to be very, very appreciative of that. And I think the game overall is perfect. You know, we executed the game to perfection. We dominated midfield, we know they’ve got a very good midfield with the two young players Mbule and Mokoena, future future Bafana Bafana stars, but today my midfield was just, total total dominance. Mlambo, Makhaula, and Sithebe, the movements, the way we shifted the ball, I think that they couldn’t really get it off us.”
“And then Mulenga and Memela, they’d like to tuck inside and play next to the ten. So we kept on getting balls in behind their midfield too. So ja, I think it was it was inevitable, you know, just mildly disappointed, my only criticism of today’s performance is the fact that we didn’t score more than one goal.”
“And then we gave ourselves a little bit of pressure to soak up towards the end, because ja, knowing SuperSports they always going to push, they’re always going to press, they’re always going to put teams under pressure. And they go with using the longball tactic, which they do so well, but we manage that well, but I think if we had scored two or three of the chances that we created, we would have been well out the way and well cleared and then we could have enjoyed the game more.”
“But I think that’s the excitement of the DStv Premier League, it’s on the edge of your seat kind of thing, but I’m just delighted with the three points and delighted that we keep making our mark in this league, and the players keep getting better and better and improving, and showing that you know that we are really a sleeping giant that’s that’s slowly waking up.”
