Benni Happy To See ‘Old AmaZulu’

AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy was pleased with his team’s 2-0 win over Cape Town City on Sunday in the DStv Premiership.

Augustine Mulenga scored a brace in the first half, after coming on as early replacement for Philani Zulu.

McCarthy was happy with his team’s work ethic, and says the win was a good morale booster ahead of the international break.

“Ja, no listen, happy for the boys, happy for the win, they deserve it,” McCarthy told the club’s media department

“I think today we showed more a little bit of the same character, the same mentality, what we made of. We started the game really well against Cape Town City, who’s very well known for their strong possession play, their movement, the movement in the little pockets in spaces, picking it up there where they could have hurt us.

“But ja, our work ethic, and just the players that we had on the pitch, we restricted them from playing through the middle, and we allowed them to space out wide where know we were very confident, and we were solid defending if they go with the crosses and long balls.

“But ja, I think the composure we had today in front of goal, I think we could have added probably two or three more goals to the game because of the chances that was created, we definitely created the better chances of the game. And that goal-line clearance from the corner from Tercious twice, if that goes in three-nil, Mulenga twice, two sitters, even more easier chances than the two goals that he scored.

“So we could have easily added to the tally. But you know what, you accept and you’re happy with what we got today, because the last two games, we definitely have not been ourselves. So today, we look again, like the old AmaZulu, that AmaZulu that’s got that fighting spirit that, when we have the ball our movements is good, and when we put balls in the right areas, and then we created the chances and we score the goals.

“So today we look like that AmaZulu again. So from where we come from to where we are at today, so I take it. 2-0 is a great result, and I’m also very happy for Veli, that he didn’t concede again, so another clean sheet. So something to build on, some positive, some confidence for the defence, some confidence for the goalkeeper, but overall for the whole team, good confidence.”

McCarthy also revealed that his players now have a few off-days before they will focus on their game against unbeaten Stellenbosch FC.

“Hopefully now this international break comes at a time where we can regroup, and we can give the boys a few days off to be with their families and enjoy the performance they gave today, and then when we come back, then we focus on Stellenbosch, because they’re highfliers so they don’t come any difficult than that,” he said.

“So Stellenbosch another tough opposition where we have to be ready, we have to prepare. But if this team pitches up, then I think I’m excited for Stellenbosch coming.”
