Benni – Moeneeb Is Going To Be One Of The Best GK Coaches

AmaZulu head coach, and the reigning PSL Coach of the Season, Benni McCarthy, believes that Moeneeb Josephs is going to be one of the best goalkeeper coaches to come out of South Africa.

McCarthy, who led AmaZulu to a second place finish in the DStv Premiership season, told iDiski Times that he is delighted to have brought Josephs into his technical team, as his former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana teammate is a breathe of fresh air.

McCarthy says that Josephs brings his own unique energy to training, and he has been incredibly impressed how ‘Slimkat’ has adapted to the coaching role.

“Can’t you see the biggest smile on my face every game?” McCarthy told Rob Delport in Edition 20 of iDiski Times.

“I’m not a bitter guy, I don’t have worries, I don’t have stress about having fought the whole week with the chairman about team selections and who must play and who mustn’t play, and when you come to the game, you drained out of your mind, you understand?

“And now it’s like, you see the joyfulness of Moeneeb, the craziness of Moeneeb every day in training. And even if you have a bad day or you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, this guy just has ability to turn it upside down, it makes you smile and makes you happy, and makes you love what you do. And he’s been one of the best parts of joining AmaZulu.”

“Now Moeneeb as a goalkeeper, when in his playing days, he was one of the country’s best; Slimkat!” McCarthy continued.

“He was just a force, he was a leader, he started everything for teams where he played and where he’s played, he’s been successful. So now he’s making that transition from playing to coaching. And I think he’s young, and his ideas as a player is still very fresh. And now he’s having to transform into becoming a coach, which will take time because I also just didn’t overnight become a coach from playing, so Moeneeb’s content is very fresh, and he’s making the goalkeepers understand real life situations, real game situations.

“And I think that’s why our goalkeepers have improved so much, because Moeneeb is still a goalkeeper, but he’s having to coach them. And it’s worked, it’s worked like a charm.

“It works like a charm because the energy he brings, the excitement that he brings. He learns on the job, he gets better and better, and his content, the way he trains his goalkeepers is even becoming like, wow, that’s such a quick transition for Moeneeb, that he knows all the training systems now, how he sorts goalkeepers out, and the way they work, in the manner that they work. It’s like he’s been a goalkeeper coach for years, and it’s just his  first outing as a goalkeeper coach.

“So I think they have fun. The goalkeepers have fun with Moeneeb. And ja, when they work, they work exceptionally hard. He’s been brilliant, and he’s gonna be one of the best goalkeeper coaches that we’re gonna have. You know, you see the what the likes of Andre Arendse has done, Moeneeb is following in that footsteps, of becoming one of those top goalkeeper coaches that you see when he’s at the helm, the fast improvement of the goalkeepers.”
