Benni Proud As AmaZulu Make CAFCL History

AmaZulu FC head coach Benni McCarthy has reacted after his team progressed to the CAF Champions League group stages beating TP Mazembe on the away goal rule in their second preliminary round tie.

McCarthy saw his side secure an important 1-1 draw away from home against the five-times winners of the competitive cup,.

The first leg had ended in a goalless draw in Durban last week.

The KwaZulu-Natal giants are now through to the group stages of the CAF Champions League following the result at the Stade Mazembe in Lubumbashi.

“I know sometimes I’m a tough coach, I’m a tough father, but it’s only because I want the best for my players, I want the best for my kids,” McCarthy told the club’s media department.

“I think they need to be more focused, they need to be more concentrated, because you can’t have the quality, the ability that we have and you want to be mediocre sometimes.

“When I’m critical about my team, it’s because I know what they have and I don’t want them to lower their standards, that’s sometimes why I am very hard, when I criticise, it’s because I want them to understand that when you play, you have the shortest career, we have fifteen years, twenty years max of a career, and you’ve got make the most of what you have.

“I don’t want them to have any regrets when they hang up their boots, and so that’s why I am the way that I am.

“But today they showed me what I know, what I see every day. I saw heart, I saw character, I saw personality, I saw arrogance and I saw a football team, a group of players, that’s not scared for anything, especially what we’ve been through, on the eve of the game.

“We had covid tests negative, negative, negative since arriving here, and then on the eve of the game they target one of our most important defenders in the team, Thapelo Xoki.

“And then on the day of the game it’s the same, we took them to the same lab, the test came back negative twice, but their side say that he’s positive, and then we launched a complaint, and then ten minutes before kick off, they say, yes, he can play now.

“So for my team to have gone through that, and go out there and batter Mazembe, yes, we’ve never played on an astroturf before, so it was another new thing for us to do, and to have put in the performance that we did.

“Wow, these guys, they are the real heroes of AmaZulu, and they go in the history books of the club, after what they’ve done today on the football pitch against a team, five-times CAF champions league winners,  seasoned campaigners, this is one of the most experienced teams, and one of the toughest teams in the competition.”
