Billiat Steers Chiefs To Maritzburg Win

In Wednesday’s late match Kaizer Chiefs ended 2021 with a good 2-0 win over Maritzburg United, while there were wins for Stellenbosch and Baroka as six DStv Premiership matches were played on the day.

The victory lifts Chiefs to third position, one point behind Stellenbosch, who victorious on Wednesday afternoon.

Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 Maritzburg United

Kaizer Chiefs battled to a 2-0 win over Maritzburg at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Phathutshedzo Nange was off target in the fifth minute, while Amadou Soukouna went just wide at the other end in the tenth minute.

Shots dried up until Khama Billiat’s effort in the 33rd minute, took a slight deflection and went wide, while Phumlani Ntshangase’s radar was also off just after, as was another chance by Billiat moments later.

But the Zimbabwean wasn’t to be denied with his third chance, when in the 36th minute his first time shot off Njabulo Blom’s cut back pass beat Marcel Engelhardt to make it 1-0. 

Keagan Dolly and Bernard Parker almost combined in the 40th minute, but Parker’s finish was just off target, while Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya’s first time volley from a Dolly pass went just over a minute later.

Chiefs led 1-0 at the break, But Maritzburg had some early chances after the break, with Daniel Apkeyi having to make saves from Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Daylon Claasen.

Maritzburg went close again in the 53rd minute, but Keagan Richie’s corner kick hit the upright and the ball bounced clear.

While it was Maritzburg who were piling on the pressure, Chiefs had a good chance on the counter in the 67th minute, but Claasen did well to make a last gasp tackle to stop any danger.

Chiefs went close with another counter in the 72nd minute, but this time Billiat’s final effort went wide of goal.

Hlongwane’s effort in the 79th minute lacked power and Akpeyi gathered easily, as Maritzburg continued to push.

But in the 80th minute having come off the bench, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo sealed the victory, as he curled in a superb goal to make it 2-0. Assist by Billiat.

There were a few late half chances at both ends, with Happy Mashiane almost making it three in stoppage time, but he shot wide.

A hard fought three points, but a good win in the end for Chiefs.

SuperSport United 3-2 Cape Town City

SuperSport beat a ten-man City 3-2 at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.

Gamphani Lungu gave SuperSport the lead in the ninth minute as he raced onto a long pass from Onismor Bhasera before unleashing a shot across goal and into the bottom far corner.

It was 2-0 to SuperSport in the 27th minute, when Teboho Mokoena scored directly from a set piece, catching Marques out with his good strike.

City were awarded a penalty two minutes into the second half, as Bhasera fouled Khanyisa Mayo. Fagrie Lakay stepped up and blasted in.

But the visitors were reduced to ten minute in the 55th minute, when Thabo Nodada picked up two successive yellow cards.

But City were level in the 74th minute, when Kegan Johannes was unable to keep Terrence Mashego’s header out of the goal, and it was awarded as on own goal by the young SuperSport defender.

However Johannes made amends in the 81st minute as his excellent strike from just inside the box left Marques with no chance.

Taariq Fielies had the ball in the back of the net in the 89th minute, but he was called off-side, though replays showed the call was just incorrect, and SuperSport walked away the three points.

Swallows 2-2 Golden Arrows

Dylan Kerr sat on the bench for the first time as Swallows took a two goal lead, only to see Golden Arrows come back and force a 2-2 draw at Dobsonville Stadium.

Kamohelo Mahlatsi put the home team into the lead with a good strike in the 20th minute.

It was 2-0 in the 38th minute as Mwape Musonda got his first goal for Swallows.

Arrows pulled one back three minutes into the second half as Michael Gumede headed in.

And Arrows were level in the 75th minute, as Gumede was on hand to finish off a good move from the visitors.

Chippa United 0-0 Sekhukhune United

It was goalless between Chippa and Sekhukhune at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

Neither team were able to find the net and end the year with a point a piece.

Baroka 1-0 Royal AM

Baroka picked up a much needed win as a late goal gave them a 1-0 win over Royal AM at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Goalless at the break, Baroka grabbed the winner  in the 82nd minute, Sekela Sithole getting himself on the scoresheet.

Baroka move off the foot of the table to 15th, with TS Galaxy dropping back into bottom spot.

TS Galaxy 0-1 Stellenbosch

A late own goal handed Stellenbosch all three points as they beat TS Galaxy 1-0 at the Mbombela Stadium in the afternoon game..

It was a goalless first half, with both teams creating chances, but unfortunately let down by their finishing.

And there was more of the same in the second half, and it looked to be heading to a draw, only for Given Msimango to concede an own goal in the 89th minute, deflecting Judas Moseamedi’s low cross toward Ibrahim Jabaar into his own goal.

Stellenbosch move into second place onto 29 points, but are still 14 behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who play tomorrow.
