Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has reacted to his team’s 3-1 win over Ethiopia and criticised the pitch at Buhar Dar stadium heavily.
SA remain on top of group G after they picked up an important victory in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers clash against second’s spot Ethiopia.
Broos was very proud of his team, saying they showed great character to beat Ethiopia in their back yard.
“Certainly today, because it was a very difficult game, on a very difficult pitch and I said it before the game against the players, we don’t need the trophy of best football player in the team, but we need the trophy today of the team with the most character,” he said after the match.
“And we showed that character, we showed the mentality, even when it was equalising of Ethiopia. We went down, we fight for every ball, and we won at last and it’s a great win.”
However, despite the three points, Broos slammed Ethiopia for opting to play on such a horrible pitch.
“Yeah, but I don’t think there were other causes, they were not easy on the ball. And that’s certainly the pitch,” he added.
“We were a little bit afraid when the ball was coming back control whatever. And you saw that in our game also, we were not confident like we were against against Ghana.
“And this is only the reason of the pitch. And I said it before the game, I don’t understand that such important game that Ethiopia is coming to play here on the pitch.
“It’s also not good for them because they are a team who like to play football, not kick and rush football that they play. And on this field, you can do nothing else, you can rush because it’s very difficult.”
