Broos – Mabasa Sub Not Due To Injury

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has revealed that Tshegofatso Mabasa’s first-half substitution was not because of an injury.

The Belgian tactician saw his side beat Ethiopia 3-1 in their own backyard to extend their lead at the top of Group G.

However, Bafana struggled somewhat in the first half when goalkeeper Ronwen Williams had to make a few good saves.

Broos made an early substitution, replacing Mabasa with Victor Letsoalo after 35 minutes but insisted it was not because the Orlando Pirates player was injured.

“Yes, and I know it’s a little bit disappointing for Tshegofatso, but he had difficulties and and it was for us better that we change that,” he told Bafana’s media department.

“And I explained him for what, so we trained on it this week, but I don’t think that he really understood what we asked from him, and therefore we have to change him after half an hour.

The 68-year-old also addressed the late change to Bafana’s starting XI after Vincent Pule picked up an injury during warm-up, praising his replacement Thabiso Kutumela.

“It’s always a bad thing that just before kickoff you have to change a player because he’s injured,” he added.

“And also for the team because everyone is concentrated to get started the game and then suddenly 10 minutes before there’s someone who was injured.

“So I was a little bit afraid but I think that Kutumela did very well and he was also the guy with the 10 others who fight for at the last minute.”

Bafana will host Ethiopia on Tuesday at the FNB Stadium.
