City End Winless Run With Victory Over SuperSport

Cape Town City picked up their first win in the DStv Premiership since January when they beat SuperSport United 3-0 at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was City’s first victory in eight games, and they remain in seventh position, but close the gap on sixth-placed Swallows to three points. SuperSport drop to fifth.

Cape Town City 3-0 SuperSport United

It was a competitive opening twenty minutes, but neither team were able to do much in the final third, with neither Peter Leeuwenburgh or Ronwen Williams having to make a save from a shot at goal.

Fagrie Lakay went close in the 29th minute, but his well struck attempt from a free kick went just over the goal.

City were awarded a penalty in the 32nd minute when Tashreeq Morris was fouled by Thatayaone Ditlhokwe. Lakay stepped up to the spot against his former team, and sent Williams the wrong way to put the home team into the lead.

SuperSport finally got their first shot off at goal in the 39th minute, but Teboho Mokoena’s effort was deflected out for a corner.

At the break, Lakay’s penalty separated the teams.

In the 58th minute Williams made a good save to stop a powerful effort from Morris.

Grant Kekana went close in the 62nd minute, after a goalmouth scramble, but substitute Mpho Makola was on hand to clear off the line. A minute later Kekana had another effort go wide.

And action swung to the other end, and Makola was on hand in the 65th minute to double City’s lad. Thabo Nodada set up the 34-year-old, and he made no mistake from close range.

Lakay set up Morris in the 70th minute, but his low shot was well saved by Williams.

Mdu Mdantsane almost made it three as he ran onto a pass from fellow substitute Aubrey Ngoma, but his first time effort struck the upright, and Morris’ shot following up went high and wide.

Mokoena had a chance for SuperSport from a free kick in the 83rd minute, but Leeuwenburgh was in the right place to stop his powerful shot.

Morris made it 3-0 in the 85th minute, tapping in from a Thami Mkhize cross, after the ball wasn’t cleared from an Ngoma corner.

An important win for Jan Olde Riekerink and his team.
