Down Set Record With Maritzburg Win

MTN8 champions Mamelodi Sundowns broke another record as they beat Maritzburg United 1-0 in a DStv Premiership match at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday evening. Earlier Cape Town City beat Chippa United 1-0.

It was a record-breaking eleventh consecutive clean sheet for Sundowns, going back three matches into last season, moving past Bidvest Wits’ run of ten 18 years ago.

Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 Maritzburg United

There was an early chance for Maritzburg as Bongokuhle Hlongwane shot over the goal in the opening minute, but thereafter it became a battle of attrition in the midfield, with few chances.

Grant Kekana’s header in the 29th minute was off target, as was Peter Shalulile’s header in the 34th minute.

Shalulile had an even better chance three minutes later, but after setting himself up nicely, he skied his chance over the goal. Just before the break Themba Zwane also skied an attempt, and at halftime it remained goalless.

Zwane had a good chance in the second minute of the second half, but is his shot lacked power and Alfred Ndengane was able to get a foot on it to slow it down further. Pavol Safranko’s looping header two minutes later was comfortable for Marcel Engelhardt to save.

Safranko had a great chance in the 53rd minute as he fired in a powerful effort after a good Sundowns attack, but Engelhardt pulled off a great stop to deny the striker.

Sundowns had been threatening in the second half, and Shalulile found the breakthrough in the 56th minute. A great long pass from Neo Maema found Shalulile as he ran past the Maritzburg defence, and his first-time volley beat Engelhardt.

Lifa Hlongwane went narrowly wide for Maritzburg with a long range effort in the 61st minute, while Engelhardt had to be alert two minutes later to deny Shalulile a second.

Safranko had another header on target in the 68th minute, but it was also straight at Engelhardt. For a short period Maritzburg threatened to find an equaliser, and Amadou Soukouna forced a save out of Reyaad Pieterse in the 80th minute.

But it was Sundowns who finished stronger, with Haashim Domingo shooting wide in the 87th minute, and substitute Mothobi Mvala doing the same in stoppage time

Sundowns move three points clear at the top of the league again, with a game in hand over second-placed Stellenbosch.

Cape Town City 1-0 Chippa United

Cape Town struck late as they beat Chippa United 1-0 at the Cape Town Stadium earlier in the day.

After a goalless first half, it looked to be heading to stale mate, before Nigerian Abdul Ajagun grabbed the winner in the 90th minute to give Eric Tinkler’s team the three points.

AmaZulu v Marumo Gallants (abandoned)

The match between AmaZulu and Marumo Gallants was abandoned after ten minutes at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, due to clashing kits.

It was a positive start to the game from the home team, but shots at goal were limited though Tercious Malepe had a chance but was wayward in the 9th minute with a first-time shot attempt.

Unfortunately after ten minutes the game was halted due to the clashing kits of both teams, and with no resolution found, it was abandoned twenty minutes later.

The match has since been rescheduled to be played on Thursday at the same venue. Kick off 15h30.
