Kaizer Chiefs legend Neil Tovey has insisted that Mamelodi Sundowns has left both the Amakhosi and Orlando Pirates behind even though the Soweto giants are bigger brands.
The 59-year-old played for the Glamour Boys between 1990 and 1999, making over 350 appearances for the club.
He recently worked as Technical Director for SAFA due to health reasons, with the vacant position yet to be officially filled.
Tovey also won a league title as a Sundowns co-coach alongside Miguel Gamondi in 2006.
Tovey spoke to the On The Whistle podcast about his former club and what needs to change for Chiefs to end their trophy draught, saying they need to look at Masandawana, who’ve have overtaken them from a technical point of view.
“Sundowns is leaving Pirates and Chiefs standing in terms of their technical performance on the field,” he said.
“I think that both those clubs have to look back and say ‘why aren’t we winning more trophies? Why is Sundowns winning all the trophies?’
“Because obviously the brands obviously surpass Sundowns’ brand by leaves and bounds – both ion them do.
“So it’s the technical performance. Once you get the technical performance, it even makes your brand grow exponentially.”
Chiefs did appoint Molefi Ntseki as Head of Technical and Academy, while Kaizer Motaung Jr was named Sporting Director of the club.
