Former Zambian Coach Linked To Swallows

By Velile Mnyandu

Former Baroka FC and Zambian national team head coach Wedson Nyirenda has emerged as a frontrunner for the vacant Swallows job.

This follows the sacking of Brandon Truter and his entire technical team after the 3-1 loss to Kaizer Chiefs in a DStv Premiership match at the Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday.

The loss condemned Swallows to the bottom of the log with only eight points from 12 matches – The Birds have only won just two of their last 31 matches in the league, a total of eight draws and 21 losses in the process, proving that the problems at the club did not only start this season.

Nyirenda, a former Zambian and Kaizer Chiefs international striker, is no stranger to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) as he helped Baroka FC to become the first Limpopo club to win a trophy in the top flight when they beat Orlando Pirates in the Telkom Knockout final in 2018.

He was a coach at Bakgaka between 2018 and 2019, playing a total of 51 matches under him, as they won only 13 with 16 draws and 22 losses.

Interestingly, Nyirenda tweeted on Saturday… “I miss the smell of the grass. I can’t wait to enter my park. It is gonna be a great and memorable time. Titles and trophies in transit.”

It had been widely reported that another former Swallows coach Gavin Hunt was a favourite for this job, with the club President Panyaza Lesufi quoted in the media as showing interest in his services just before the Chiefs loss.

But iDiski Times, understands that will not be an easy process, as Hunt is still contracted to Chippa United after he was temporarily put on a special leave and replaced by former player Kurt Lentjies, and they are still in the process of parting ways officially.
