Lionel Messi has sent a clear message to Robert Lewandowski after winning his seventh Ballon d’Or on Monday evening.
The Argentine was named the winner of the award in 2021, with Lewandowski finishing in second place and Jorginho completing the podium.
Messi used the moment during his acceptance speech to give a shoutout to this year’s rival Lewandowski, saying the Bayern Munich striker should receive a Ballon d’Or for his performance in 2020.
“I would like to mention Robert Lewandowski, it’s been a real honour to compete with you,”
“Everyone knows and we agree that you were the winner last year.
“I think France Football should award you your 2020 Ballon d’Or – you deserve it and you should have it at home.”
Lewandowski, though, did not go home empty-handed as he was named the Striker of the Year by France Football.
