How Chiefs Could End AmaZulu’s CAFCL Dreams
After AmaZulu secured second spot in the DStv Premiership to qualify for next season’s CAF Champions League, here is how Kaizer Chiefs could still end Benni McCarthy’s fairytale.
Usuthu booked second position on the table after beating Swallows 1-0, which was followed by large celebration of the players and technical team.
However, Chiefs could still spoil the party if they would continue their historic run in the CAF Champions League.
With Amakhosi having qualified for the semi-finals of the competition they could still go in and win the competition.
If that were to happen, AmaZulu and McCarthy would have to step aside because Chiefs would automatically be qualified for next year’s competition as defending champions but only two representatives from each country are allowed, according to CAF’s handbook.
“Only the holder of the title is engaged from this association when the said association is entitled to only one club.
“In case the association is allowed to engage two teams and the champion is defending its title, only the holder of the title and the champion of the national league will be allowed to be engaged.
In that particular case, the 2nd of the league will not be allowed to engage in CAF Champions League.”
However, Chiefs have a mammoth task ahead of them, facing Wydad Casablanca in the semi-final before the winners of the tie between record champions al Ahly and Esperance de Tunis await in the final.
While, the Glamour Boys are yet to lift Africa’s elite club competition, Al Ahly (9), Esperance (4) and Wydad (2) share 15 CAFCL triumphs between them.
