Khanye – Johnson A Good Fit At Pirates But…

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Junior Khanye believes that Cavin Johnson could take the reigns at Orlando Pirates but pointed to a major concern at the club.

The Soweto giants are now led by Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids as co-coaches after Josef Zinnbauer had abruptly resigned last month.

Johnson, meanwhile, who has been linked with a move to Buccaneers, had returned to South African shores after spending a successful season as an assistant coach of Pitso Mosimane at Al Ahly in Eygpt. Although it has not been confirmed officially it is believed that Johnson has left Al Ahly and could be available for a new job.

In his column in the latest edition of iDiski Times, Khanye says Johnson would suit Pirates but he would advice him to have a serious talk with the Sea Robbers chairman Dr. Ivan Khoza as he believes there are problems of management involvement in coaching.

“It is no surprise that Cavin is being linked with Orlando Pirates because he knows football,” Khanye wrote in his iDiski Times column.

“He plays the brand of football that a club like Orlando Pirates should be playing. Cavin is Ted Dumitru’s student. He worked with the School of Excellence, developing great young players for the country. At Platimum Stars he played a good brand of football while managing to win trophies for the club.

“There is a very good reason why he is being linked with Pirates. He was in South Africa for the offseason and my understanding is that there were some discussions.

“I think we all know that Orlando Pirates have a leadership problem. The involvement of Bra Stanley Screamer Shabalala and Floyd Mbhele in the first team has affected a lot of coaches negatively.

“If I was advising Calvin Johnson I would tell him to have a serious conversation with the chairman, Dr Irvin Khoza about the interference.

“I would advise Calvin to only accept the job on condition of zero interference. The interference with coaches will negatively affect any coaches plans.

“Maybe it’s the reason why there has been no announcement of a new coach because maybe they are failing to attract big name coaches at the club.

“Overall, I think Calvin would be a great addition at Pirates although I have some concerns for him if he were to join because Pirates is not a perfect working environment for a football coach.”
