Khune Explains Why He Wears No. 32
Many goalkeepers want to wear the No.1 shirt at their clubs, but Itumeleng Khune has now opened up on why he dons the No.32 shirt at Amakhosi.
The 33-year-old joined the Glamour Boys at youth levels and now recalled the day of his first trials with the club.
The goalkeeper initially trialed as a defender but coach Terror Sephooa had already selected 31 out of hundreds of trialists but when he saw the young Khune, he wanted to add him to his list as well.
“When I joined Chiefs, I came for under 13 trials as a centre-back,” Khune recalls.
“I passed the trials and the reason for my jersey number 32, I was the 32nd player to be selected on the day.
“I’m so happy that coach Terror Sephooa, at that time he was the coach, and he selected me as a central defender.
“As he was writing, he started with 32, because there were 31 players selected on the day. And he realised ‘hey, I made a mistake and I need to call that young man (as well)’.
“As I approached he just wrote there 32, Itumeleng Khune. Then I was like, ha, that’s my lucky number.”
Khune has since made 326 appearances for Chiefs senior team, as per Transfermarkt, lifting 12 trophies with Amakhosi.
