Middendorp – It’s About Making Points

While he admits it wasn’t the greatest game of football, Maritzburg United head coach Ernst Middendorp was delighted with the 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants on Wednesday.

Amadou Soukouna’s stoppage time strike see Maritzburg move up to seventh on the DStv Premiership table, after picking up a second consecutive win in the league.

Middendorp says his team were not great on the day, but he knows they can deliver better performances, and the confidence from getting points will help that going forward.

“Ja, definitely not a game from the soccer side, where you would say that you would want to watch it again,” Middendorp said after the match.

“The quality was not in a way as we would like to see it in the moment.

“But I mentioned it before the game, we have six new players in the starting eleven, you can see the connection is not there, you can see the individual belief to provide a certain performance is a little bit average, under average.

“I know I see the players in training sessions and they do much, much better. A number of players we know it, they can do much, much better.

“But good, what happened in soccer in the beginning of the season, it doesn’t matter, which team you’re watching, observing, it’s about making points.

“It’s about building up currently the confidence and then step by step and I think actually we played four games, now two home, two away and in total, we have six points, ja, that’s a fantastic result.

“We see a great goalkeeper performance again, from Marcel Engelhart, he gives us this routine of course, some players in front of him with individual mistakes, providing some options for an opponent, but we will work on it, we will get it right, and that is what we can do in the moment, step by step.”
