Mokwena – They’ve Shown Good Consistency

Rulani Mokwena says Golden Arrows are a very good team, and Mamelodi Sundowns will have to be alert when they face Mandla Ncikazi’s team in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday.

The log leaders will face an Arrows team that has surprised many this season, and find themselves third on the table, five points behind the defending champions.

Mokwena says that Arrows have shown consistency this season, and their counter-press has been impressive.

The Sundowns Co-Head Coach says his team needs to take control of the game, and be alert because their opponents are very dangerous in transition.

“Good team, I think they’ve shown good consistency throughout the season. A good team with a clear playing philosophy, with a clear structure in all scheme,” Mokwena told the club’s media department.

“In possession you know exactly how the behavior is, and structurally how they set themselves up from the build up to use both centerhalves and then have a six, whether it is Parusnath, or Shitolo, to come in and to create possibilities to link up the attack and develop the play from the back.”

“And that is a clear sign of a team that wants to be in possession, and teams that want to be in possession are teams that also have good possibilities to counter press, which is clearly a profile of Golden Arrows.”

“The very interesting thing is of the last 12 goal that they’ve scored 90% of them have come between the phase of regaining possession and attacking and they average about eight seconds to get into your final third. So clearly is a team that’s got facets where in possession they can build, out of possession they can hurt you.”

“And in transition, they are extremely dangerous. Because this is how they kill the opponent. But let’s see, they’ve got a very, very good profile, upfront Pule Mmodi, with good one on one possibilities in attack, and to be very aggressive in carrying the ball forward with dribbling, and you got to be very careful of that. And he average’s the highest number of dribbles, which is on average, four key dribbles in a match.”

“And then you’ve got Sibiya linking up with Knox or Gumede, so on the attack, very good profile. And clearly midfielders that are able to cover the ground and counter-press and help the team to initiate transition moments.”

“So we know the strength of this team and we know the quality of the team that we’re facing. And we know the work that we have to do to be able to control Golden Arrows in relation to the strengths and then infuse our playing philosophy onto onto the match so that we can dominate, not just the match in relation to dominating the ball, but we can also dominate the pitch, which is very important.”

Mokwena also gave some injury updates.

“Ja, well at the moment apart from Peter Shalulile, we almost have a clean bill of health. Kennedy’s is ruled out, still struggling a little bit. But then we have slight knocks that we got from the previous match.”

“So we have to assess, but because the turnover is so short, we have to assess, still Gaston, who had a slight knock, Brian Onyango, who was complaining towards the end of some muscle complications.”

“And then Peter we will see, hopefully, if not for this match, then hopefully he’s available for Sunday’s encounter.”
