Mamelodi Sundowns beat TP Mazembe in a CAF Champions League match at Loftus Stadium. The result confirms that Sundowns have finished top in Group B with two games still to play, and of course qualified for the quarter-finals.
Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 TP Mazembe
With TP Mazembe pushing for a result, it was an open first half of football.
Sundowns took the lead in the 27th minute through Lebohang Maboe, who made no mistake from inside the box after being set up nicely by Themba Zwane.
Trevor Mputu tried to pull one back for Mazembe in the 33rd minute, but his attempt was straight at Denis Onyango.
But it was the home team that deservedly led 1-0 at the break.
Three minutes into the second half, Onyango was called into action as he saved a deflected effort at goal.
Desperate for a result, Mazembe began to throw more numbers forward, but they were unable to penetrate a solid Sundowns defence.
Peter Shalulile came close to doubling the lead in the 82nd minute, but he headed just wide from Lyle Lakay’s corner kick.
Earlier in the day Belouizdad and Al Hilal played to a goalless draw.
