Wasteful Pirates Held By 10 Men

Orlando Pirates dropped points against Maritzburg United despite playing large parts of the second half against 10 men.

Both teams entered the game on the back of two league games without a win and it was ??? who took the early initiative.

Pirates had the first corner after seven minutes but Maritzburg keeper Marcel Engelhardt could push it out of his box.

Mabasa had the first real chance of the game but his shot from a tight angle was saved by Engelhardt.

The keeper was again at hand in the 20th minute, denying Pirates the opener following a shot by Linda Mntambo.

Pirates had another great chance in the 33rd minute but Terrence Dzukamanja failed to connect properly with a great cross from Mntambo inside the five-yard box.

The Buccaneers continued to dominate proceedings but were not able to turn their dominance into goals as the scoreline remained 0-0 at the break.

Amadou Soukouna had a great chance to open the score for Maritzburg in the 51st minute but Paseka Mako stopped his goal-bound shot with a great block.

Maritzburg went down to the 10 men in the 66th minute after Brandon Theron hit Thabang Monare with a reckless challenge.

A minute later, it was Engelhardt once again to deny Pirates following a powerful shot from Fortune Makaringe.

Engelhardt looked beaten in the 75th minute but the shot from Makaringe sailed just passed the upright.
